We are loving Thursday nights watching Gourmet Farmer on SBS. We love seeing what Matthew (the gourmet farmer) is doing, and imagining what we will grow and do when we live on the farm.
We currently have a small vegetable patch where we grow broccoli, beans, cabbages, potatoes, tomatoes (and what ever else CB decides to have a go at). We also have a lemon tree, several orange trees, and a large range of herbs. I will definitely miss having lemons and herbs on hand at the farm.
Here are the girls with some of last years’ potatoes |
The farm has a very old mulberry tree and a fig tree. Along the creek there are probably 20 or 30 plum trees, and there are also peach trees and other “wild” fruit trees along the side of the road. I am planning to embrace my inner domestic goddess and make jams, preserves, pies etc to keep for when the fresh produce is not around.
The Country Boy is a Horticulturalist and an avid gardener, and he has already planned out a massive vegetable patch. He has been pouring over heritage seed catalogues, choosing what he wants to plant in his new garden. I don’t really understand the climate of the farm and so I am not sure what will grow, but I am hoping for lots of oranges and lemons again.
We also want to have our own chickens. There is already a chicken coop behind our house so it should be relatively easy to do this. The girls are planning out their names, and Hannah has suggested we “rent” a rooster so we can have baby chickens. I’m not so keen on the idea, but we will see.
The reality is that it will take a couple of years before we are able to grow enough vegetables to meet all our needs, but it will be great to eat our own food, what ever it is!
