Lately | June 2018

Loving: Cooler days – at last. We have the fire going day and night now, and although it produces a lot of dust, you cannot beat it for a beautiful warm house!

Watching:  The Crown, and all the David Attenborough documentaries we can. We finally have enough data to be able to use Netflix so I signed up for a free month over the school holidays and have since kept it on. So far we are enjoying it, but I’m not sure what to watch next. Recommendations for good series to binge watch are gratefully received.

Listening: “Farmer Boy” by Laura Ingalls Wilder – read by Cherry Jones. We have done a bit of road tripping up to Sydney and over to Canberra and as per usual, we listened to audio books. I’ve read the book as a child but listening as an adult has been fabulous. The food!! Oh my goodness, the descriptions of the meals they ate! Just listening made me want to get into the kitchen and bake pies and cakes and biscuits and doughnuts etc. At the same time, I was feeling slightly inadequate as a farmers wife, not weaving my own cloth to make my kids clothes, or making our own candles and soap.

Reading: All the books about Europe. Student reports – it’s that time of year, so there isn’t much time for anything else

Buying: Curtains for Hannah’s room, and winter clothing for everyone. The kids have grown out of everything, so we have hit the op shops to get what we can from there, and spent a day in town stocking up on shoes (all the kids needed multiple pairs), socks, undies, tops, and the like. Apart from that, we are on a spending slow down to save for our overseas trip next year.

Looking: tired – work is taking up so much time at the moment. Also, I haven’t had a haircut since October last year (oops) so it is super long. Time to get my butt into gear and fix that one!

Making: Quince Paste. I was super excited to pick our quinces this year, but by the time we got down to the orchard to get them, they had worms in them. Insert very sad face here. Luckily the supermarket in town sells them in winter so I picked up a couple and made some delicious quince paste. Cheese platters in front of the bonfire this winter… don’t mind if I do!

Sorting: The guest room bedroom. It has become a little bit of a dumping ground for all those bits and pieces we don’t know what to do with. Then when we have guests arriving, we have a mad scramble to sort and store all the stuff so that our guests can enjoy the room.

Thinking: that I need to crochet myself a beanie. I’m about a quarter of the way through this giant zigzag blanket and I’m loving it, but I need a beanie, so I may have to put the blanket to one side for a few days and knock a beanie out quickly.

Enjoying: Playing board games over dinner with the kids at night. We love Settlers of Catan and more recently Ticket to Ride. There is nothing better than having the whole family around the table doing something fun together!

Oh Netflix recommendations, are you sure you want them, you might never get anything done again LOL!
I don’t know how old your kids are, mine are 16,13 and 11 and we LOVED a series called Stranger Things, it’s a little bit scary, but great viewing.

I however, loved watching Taste of The Country, I only wish there were more episodes. Country Town Rescue (Australian), Restoration Australia, Oh and if you like Little House on The Prairie, watch When Calls The Heart, it’s a little bit lame and unrealistic in places, but the town, the era, the clothes, the ladies…swoon!

I’ll stop now, before it becomes blatantly obvious what an addiction I have! LOL

    Beautiful Photo’s

And you’re not on your Pat Malone with the spare bedroom thing, I consider it a sign of a full and busy life 😉

It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got through shearing without a hitch (thankfully 🙏) but we’ve had a run of the flu followed by Covid run through the family since then. The kids and I have tested positive (this is my second time getting it 🦠) though so far C has managed to avoid it. There has been a lot of lying on the couch feeling pretty ordinary. Han had to reschedule her driving test for a 4th time due to Covid, which is disappointing for her because she wants her freedom and for us because it would be so much more convenient if she could drive herself places. Just to add in to the mix, our hot water system has chosen now as a good time to die so we’re on cold showers until we’re all out of iso. This is not meant to be a whinging post but sometimes life just sucks a bit and it’s good to be real. Fortunately, the sight of the fire going with a stack of wood next to it cheers us up. Things will improve soon. Onwards we go…

We’ve been busy spending time with friends and family, harvesting the last of the summer produce, as well as a short escape to explore the big smoke. After the craziness of last term it was the break we all needed. It’s back to school for me tomorrow, and the kids are back on Wednesday. Shearing starts soon and so it’s all systems go over the next few weeks.
Covid has made some late changes to our weekend pl Covid has made some late changes to our weekend plans so we are embracing the unexpected and doing not much at home. Plenty of time for hanging out on the dam and enjoy the perfect weather.
Autumn has arrived in the orchard and the apple tr Autumn has arrived in the orchard and the apple trees are full of fruit. Yesterday we filled five baskets of apples that had fallen off the trees. Then we had apple crumble for dessert last night. Between the orchard and the vegetable garden this time of year is always super busy as we deal with all the harvest. No so busy though, that I can’t grab the camera and snap a few pics.
On weekends he makes himself a hot milo and lies o On weekends he makes himself a hot milo and lies on the veranda in the sun, just chilling and enjoying the freedom (until mum grabs her camera at least 🙄🤣).
Late summer evenings spent picking fruit in the or Late summer evenings spent picking fruit in the orchard are just the best. We take baskets down to gather the fruit and we inspect the trees and plan what we will do with it all. Tonight we gathered blackberries, nectarines and the first apples. The kids eat the fruit right off the trees - it tastes so much better than shop bought fruit. All the rain this year has not been good for all our plants; no mulberries and a lot less of some of the others. It reminds us of how much we depend on the weather and how much is out of our hands.
