Holidaying

Hello from Narooma, on the South Coast of NSW. It’s one of our favourite spots to get away, and we have been here almost every year since we moved to the farm. We’ve finally made it to the holidays! The last week of term seemed like a sprint, with so much to do, and not nearly enough time to do it in. I stepped away from the computer purely due to lack of time, and though we’ve been doing lots, we have been having fun too!

Holidaying-1-2

Last Wednesday afternoon we drove up to Sydney so that Hannah could compete at the state swimming finals on Thursday morning. She was in a relay event for small schools (less than 25 students) which I love because there is no way our little school can compete with large city schools. Her team had to go through a district and regional swim meet to qualify for the state finals. She had been training hard, and it was so exciting and special for her to be able to compete in the pool at the Sydney Aquatic Centre. It was all very serious, with them having to wear a certain swim cap, and her name was even on the board while she was swimming her lap. Her team did really well, and all us parents were bursting with pride at how our kids from a little village did their best, and got to compete in such a special place. It’s something they will always remember. Talk about proud mum – I never expected any child with my genetics to do anything so sporty! Just quietly, Hannah was pretty chuffed too!

Holidaying-1-3

Once Hannah’s race was over, we headed to the mountains for a few days catching up with family and friends. Hannah had grown like a weed all summer and had virtually no clothes that fitted her well, so she and I went clothes shopping in the afternoon. Gone are the days where she will wear what ever I buy. She now has opinions about what she likes, but thankfully, we are mostly on the same page. Finding jeans has been a problem though. She is so tall and thin, that jeans that are actually long enough slide right off her. We’re on the look out for some good jeans that have adjustable waist tags – Know any good ones? We did find some leggings, t shirts, a cute skirt, winter boots, and a winter coat for her, so at least we now know she won’t freeze as the weather cools down.

We had such a good time in the mountains. As well as shopping with Hannah, we ate like kings because Mum pulled out all the stops on the food front with all kinds of home made goodies, we managed to visit some great bookshops and everyone got some books, I had a quick peek in my fave clothing shop ever, and we managed to catch up with friends. A really good weekend!

Yesterday afternoon we drove straight from the mountains to Narooma. Today was spent lazing about, scooting along the foreshore path, playing on the tidal flats during low tide, and generally having fun.

We are going to spend few more days here, enjoying the quiet and relaxation before we head back to the farm and get into Autumn mode. I’m feeling motivated to clear out a few lurking cupboards, and we need to go for a drive to collect some acorns to feed the pigs. Clearly a week away is what I needed to get my head back in shape. Love a holiday!

Have you got a sporty kid, but not sure how it happened? Know any good places to get kids jeans?  Where do you go to get away? What’s been happening around your neck of the woods lately?

Kmart jeans have the adjustable waist to about kids size 14 I think. My daughter grew out of them after a season but they lasted well and not $$ at all.

Nice to see you in the pictures there too Jo!! Narooma looks lovely. I have a 4 yo who was out in hubby’s footy gear at 7.30 am this morning if that counts as sporty. Footy season is well and truely upon us here, which I dont mind except filthy, stinky footy socks. ha ha!! Basking here in beautiful autumn days here and just enjoying doing some gardening and pottering about.

congratulations to Hannah and her team. I used to play hockey , a stupid game for someone who wore glasses. I also played what we knew as basketball but is now called netball. None of my sons was sporty. Eldest grandson captains a state team and has done so for several years. He is in Yr 12 and would like to be PE teacher. Can’t help you with the clothes except for a comment. Three Christmases ago, that is Christmas 2014, I spent a very long time trying to find clothes for two granddaughters which would appeal to them but were not tarty. It was very hard, I was appalled at cut and design of clothes for 10 and 12 year old girls.

Pumpkin Patch is good quality and their little kids’ pants have the adjustable waists. I wasn’t sure if their bigger kid stuff would, but these jeans at least seem to: http://www.pumpkin patch.com.au/flatshot/W6EG65001/col/CHW/listing/335080/categorypath/girl/girl/jeans–pants/

Team work makes the dream work. We were asked rec Team work makes the dream work.
We were asked recently whether we “make” our kids work on the farm. The answer is “of course not”. Having said that, all three love to help out whenever they can. They all work hard because they want to; because they take pride in working hard and contributing in a meaningful way to our family life; because they love living on our farm and don’t remember life before we moved here. Whether it be planting trees or doing sheep work or feeding animals, they all want to be involved. As a parent, nothing is better than watching them grow in skill and confidence as they work along side you. We’re so glad that we get to spend time with our three, working together.
We’ve had an unexpected addition to the family ☘️🐑. She is a lot easier to look after than the other family members but she does try to escape her yard and head butt people. Poddy lambs are super cute but they tend to think they are a human. Clover the lamb is sure that Meg is her mum. Can’t think why… 🤔🤣

It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got through shearing without a hitch (thankfully 🙏) but we’ve had a run of the flu followed by Covid run through the family since then. The kids and I have tested positive (this is my second time getting it 🦠) though so far C has managed to avoid it. There has been a lot of lying on the couch feeling pretty ordinary. Han had to reschedule her driving test for a 4th time due to Covid, which is disappointing for her because she wants her freedom and for us because it would be so much more convenient if she could drive herself places. Just to add in to the mix, our hot water system has chosen now as a good time to die so we’re on cold showers until we’re all out of iso. This is not meant to be a whinging post but sometimes life just sucks a bit and it’s good to be real. Fortunately, the sight of the fire going with a stack of wood next to it cheers us up. Things will improve soon. Onwards we go…

We’ve been busy spending time with friends and family, harvesting the last of the summer produce, as well as a short escape to explore the big smoke. After the craziness of last term it was the break we all needed. It’s back to school for me tomorrow, and the kids are back on Wednesday. Shearing starts soon and so it’s all systems go over the next few weeks.
