Some Delicious Cakes For You To Try

Farmers wives can all bake! It seems to come with the job. I guess in the olden days, keeping your farmer man going when he was working physically hard was a full time job. It is no wonder that country shows are full of amazing cakes and cookery. I don’t imagine I will ever be as good as some of these women who have devoted their lives to cooking, but still here are some delicious cakes which I have made, for you to whip up for afternoon tea today! Go on – be a devil!

This Passionfruit Shortcake takes me right back to my childhood! My mum used to make this when we had guests coming to visit, and I still love it today. I’ve had lots of people tell me how delicious it is, and you can also replace the passionfruit with lime zest and juice for a tasty twist.

This Sticky Quince and Gingerbread Cake is beautiful and soft, with sticky spots where those delicious quinces are. Get on to it while quinces are still in the shops. Perfect for winter with the ginger flavour giving the cake a little warming kick!

This Pumpkin Spice Cake is a real favourite here in our house, and whenever I make it for the village harvest festival, I always get a good price for it! As you know, I’m always looking for more ways to use up all those pumpkins that the Country Boy grows!

OK, so this isn’t strictly an afternoon tea cake, but it is still worth a mention, because it is so darn delicious! This Chocolate Hazelnut Cheesecake, was whipped up by Country Boy over three years ago, and still gets trotted out from time to time! The base is amazing! I’m not a big cheesecake fan, but I cannot say no to this!

Just recently I shared this Pumpkin Fruit Cake recipe which was also very popular. It is super easy to make, and we all wolfed it down!

So there you have it! Some delicious cakes to channel your inner farmers wife this fine day (or to just enjoy some cake!). You can also check out my recipe page for a complete list of recipes I have here on the blog – I’m always adding more! Get on to it – toot sweet!

What is your favourite cake? Got any good recipes for me?

Oh I don’t know if I like the cheesecake or the passionfruit cake more. This is like having to choose a dessert off the menu and hoping your husband orders the opposite and shares 🙂

Yum – your Sticky Quince and Gingerbread Cake looks devine! I think I’m more of a savoury person, then a sweet person, but my husband is a massive cheesecake fan. Here is my latest cheesecake recipe: http://goodfoodweek.blogspot.com.au/2015/08/recipe-goodfoodweeks-choc-mandarin.html

Sounds delicious! I love having a cake or slice in my big old biscuit tin to offer for friends or family who drop in for a cuppa! It will never cease to astound me how quick it can disappear with a house full of young men though. 😉

    xx

Team work makes the dream work. We were asked rec Team work makes the dream work.
We were asked recently whether we “make” our kids work on the farm. The answer is “of course not”. Having said that, all three love to help out whenever they can. They all work hard because they want to; because they take pride in working hard and contributing in a meaningful way to our family life; because they love living on our farm and don’t remember life before we moved here. Whether it be planting trees or doing sheep work or feeding animals, they all want to be involved. As a parent, nothing is better than watching them grow in skill and confidence as they work along side you. We’re so glad that we get to spend time with our three, working together.
We’ve had an unexpected addition to the family ☘️🐑. She is a lot easier to look after than the other family members but she does try to escape her yard and head butt people. Poddy lambs are super cute but they tend to think they are a human. Clover the lamb is sure that Meg is her mum. Can’t think why… 🤔🤣

It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got through shearing without a hitch (thankfully 🙏) but we’ve had a run of the flu followed by Covid run through the family since then. The kids and I have tested positive (this is my second time getting it 🦠) though so far C has managed to avoid it. There has been a lot of lying on the couch feeling pretty ordinary. Han had to reschedule her driving test for a 4th time due to Covid, which is disappointing for her because she wants her freedom and for us because it would be so much more convenient if she could drive herself places. Just to add in to the mix, our hot water system has chosen now as a good time to die so we’re on cold showers until we’re all out of iso. This is not meant to be a whinging post but sometimes life just sucks a bit and it’s good to be real. Fortunately, the sight of the fire going with a stack of wood next to it cheers us up. Things will improve soon. Onwards we go…

We’ve been busy spending time with friends and family, harvesting the last of the summer produce, as well as a short escape to explore the big smoke. After the craziness of last term it was the break we all needed. It’s back to school for me tomorrow, and the kids are back on Wednesday. Shearing starts soon and so it’s all systems go over the next few weeks.
Covid has made some late changes to our weekend pl Covid has made some late changes to our weekend plans so we are embracing the unexpected and doing not much at home. Plenty of time for hanging out on the dam and enjoy the perfect weather.
