A little trick from the farmhouse kitchen this Friday.
We have 13 chickens here on the farm. At this time of year they are moulting so we only get one or two eggs a day, but during the summer we regularly get 9 or 10 each day (a couple of our chickens are in retirement due to extreme old age). That is a lot of eggs to keep track of, and to remember which eggs need to be used first.
To solve this problem we have a little trick – we write the date on the top of each egg before we put them away. When we go to use an egg, we just take the egg with the oldest number on it first. As you can see often it is one of the kids who do this. A lead pencil is all we need.
