A Recipe Book Giveaway

You know how I love to peruse through a cookbook and get some inspiration to cook up all the produce from our garden? Of course you do. I did a big cull of cookbooks over the summer holidays, but I still have a shelf full of them. All my favourite books focus on beautiful, fresh seasonal produce, cooked simply. Just like what I try to do in my own kitchen.

Australian Country Magazine is launching a new cookbook (just in time for Mothers Day), and has given me a copy to give away to my lovely readers. It’s full of recipes that celebrate the fresh produce each season brings. You can get your copy from the your local newsagent (From May 4), or online here. I’m sure you would enjoy flicking through it and getting some inspiration of your own! Alternatively, give it to Mum for Mothers Day (and then whip her up a lovely lunch while she kicks back and relaxes).

To win a copy delivered to you in time for Mothers Day, leave a comment telling me your favourite Autumn recipe! The kids and I will choose our favourite on Tuesday April 28. That way the lucky winner will have it in time for Mothers Day.

Disclosure: I was offered a free copy of this recipe book for my readers. I was not given any form of compensation for running this competition. I just thought some of my readers may enjoy this book.

Update – this competition is now closed. Congratulations to Shane with his suggestion for a ginger pear cake. We will definitely be giving it a try! An email should be in your inbox Shane!

So tell me, what is your favourite Autumn Recipe?

Mine is the pumpkin-corn-bean -soup of the Huron Indians from my blog-friend Grace from Canada. It is based on an old story of a village where people fought and were angry at each other. Then the God thought he wanted to learn them how to live in peace and how we all need each others support and comfort. So he planted a pumpkin that would keep the ground moist, a corn to catch the sun above and a bean that could get support from the corn. They grew so well, that people of the village came to admire and realised how they should live, too. I always think of this story when I plant and harvest. I'm into permacultural farming, too, so it kind of suits that philosophy, too.

Being from the Apple isle, I would have to say an apple and rhubarb crumble, with vanilla bean custard.

I'm a fan of autumn peach & strawberry crumble… The memory of summer and the anticipation of winter in a bowl. With custard.

Pumpkin soup with fresh crusty homemade bread. Absolutely delicious with some sour cream, my littlest one even chose this for her birthday treat dinner!

As it is pear & apple season, nothing makes a cold night better than a caramelised pear and ginger cake with some fresh cream.

Heading into soup weather and I love Split Pea and Ham Soup. The one I make is an oldie from one of the Donna Hay Magazines and the kids love it too 🙂

Hi Jo, my favourite Autumn recipe is my mum's ham and vegetable soup, eaten with crusty fresh bread from the bakery. Mum slow cooks it over the entire day so by the time dinner rolls around, the flavours are amazing. I know it sounds silly to get excited over soup but it is one of my favourite childhood memories for Autumn.

A lovely, easy Christmas with family, good food, a A lovely, easy Christmas with family, good food, a few presents, an afternoon swim and dinner on the veranda as the sun set. Time to stop and be thankful for the many blessings of the year. I hope you had a lovely Christmas too!
We have been mulling over how to fix up the drivew We have been mulling over how to fix up the driveway and lead up to our house for a while. Currently it’s just a dumping ground for old bits of metal and a big pile of mulch, but C would like to create a turning area and put in a garden. First up though, there’s a huge old stump that needs to go. What better excuse is there to have a fire on Sunday afternoon? C and the kids jumped on the quad bike and trailer, and hauled back a big pile of sticks and logs to help the stump burn. Once the fire was going, marshmallows were found and roasted. No better way to spend time together.

We were asked recently whether we “make” our kids work on the farm. The answer is of course not. Having said that, all three love to help out whenever they can. They all work hard because they want to; because they take pride in working hard and contributing in a meaningful way to our family life; because they love living on our farm and don’t remember life before we moved here. Whether it be planting trees or doing sheep work or feeding animals, they all want to be involved. As a parent, nothing is better than watching them grow in skill and confidence as they work along side you. We’re so glad that we get to spend time with our three, working together.
We’ve had an unexpected addition to the family ☘️🐑. She is a lot easier to look after than the other family members but she does try to escape her yard and head butt people. Poddy lambs are super cute but they tend to think they are a human. Clover the lamb is sure that Meg is her mum. Can’t think why… 🤔🤣

It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got through shearing without a hitch (thankfully 🙏) but we’ve had a run of the flu followed by Covid run through the family since then. The kids and I have tested positive (this is my second time getting it 🦠) though so far C has managed to avoid it. There has been a lot of lying on the couch feeling pretty ordinary. Han had to reschedule her driving test for a 4th time due to Covid, which is disappointing for her because she wants her freedom and for us because it would be so much more convenient if she could drive herself places. Just to add in to the mix, our hot water system has chosen now as a good time to die so we’re on cold showers until we’re all out of iso. This is not meant to be a whinging post but sometimes life just sucks a bit and it’s good to be real. Fortunately, the sight of the fire going with a stack of wood next to it cheers us up. Things will improve soon. Onwards we go…
