If you’ve been reading this blog at all, you probably know that we have a dinosaur obsessed six year old. She is fascinated by them, and can reel off all kinds of facts and figures – whether you need to know them or not. Over the years we have acquired a range of dinosaur books and models, and we have also visited the dinosaur museum in Canberra.
I had been thinking for a while that we should get to the Australian Museum in Sydney sometime so that she could see the dinosaur exhibits there. I looked online and saw they had a special exhibit on Tyrannosaurs during the holidays and I knew that we had to plan a visit while we were up in the mountains.
So yesterday, my sister, her three children, my parents, and our family jumped on a train to Sydney.
We stopped for morning tea in Hyde Park before heading into the museum. In typical fashion, Hannah immediately started climbing a tree. You can take a child out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of that child!
Meg (and the older kids) loved the dinosaur exhibits. The highlight was probably being able to hold actual fossilised bones, and casts of tyrannosaurus teeth. A warning though: the animations freaked Toby out a little. It’s probably not great for the under 5’s. Particularly if they are a little timid. The animations were fantastic, but quite realistic.
I love the old building and the skeleton hall. I had flashbacks to when I was a small child (probably four) and going to see the dinosaurs with my parents. I still remember being traumatised because a security guard said he would lock me in for the night. I totally freaked out.
Luckily no security guards were suggesting that they lock us in, and no child was given nightmares for the next 32 years of
her their life. It’s funny what remember from when we were little!
By the time we had seen the dinosaurs, and a few other exhibits, the kids were getting hungry. We walked back to the park for some lunch and a run around. After a week of temperatures in the single digits on the farm, our three were thrilled by the gorgeous, warm, Sydney winter weather.
Following lunch and a play we had a wander through the park, and finished off the afternoon with an ice-cream.
It really was a perfect day!
