Each year sees Country Boy have a big plan for the garden. When we first got here it was all about establishing the vegetable garden. We burnt out old tree stumps, and then got going with the tractor to rip up the ground, before digging in lots of sheep poo (free here on the farm), and finally planting the vegetables.
Last year was all about the orchard. Country Boy spent ages planning how to set it up, before once again getting out the tractor to rip up the dirt. He and his father cut large straight trees for the corner poles, and trellis and fenced it all in. He then set up an irrigation system before we finally planted the trees. So far all the trees have survived. We still need to bird net the whole enclosure, but as we won’t get any fruit for a year or two, we have decided to wait until we need the net before we embark on that adventure.
So 2014’s project has been decided on. We are going to build a new chook shed (in a different spot), and knock down the old one. We are then going to pull out the fence at the back of the house and extend the garden.
Of course it isn’t just a simple as pulling everything down. First of all we need to build the new chook shed so that the chickens have somewhere fox proof to live, and we need to build a new fence so that the sheep don’t get into the yard and eat everything.
Like the vegetable garden, and the orchard, I have a feeling that this is going to be a bit of a drawn out project.
P.S. Look how dry it is at the moment – we desperately need rain!
