The Reader

Hannah is getting to the stage where she is enjoying the books I used to read as a kid. To be honest I am enjoying them all over again too.
We have rediscovered The Secret Seven, and The Little House On The Prairie series. Roald Dahl has been very popular too.
We are also reading The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe together before the kids go to bed. The girls are both so excited to hear what is going to happen next. I love watching them while I am reading. Their faces eagerly listening, and trying to guess what will happen next.

Often I will find Hannah curled up somewhere with a book. She is hooked! Our only problem is that we are fast running out of books for her to read. We have some Famous Five, and a few other Enid Blyton books to go, but we need some new ideas.

What other books can you recommend for an enthusiastic reader?

My eldest is going through books like crazy at the moment too! Thankfully she is borrowing plenty from the library at school, because I can't keep up with how quick she is reading!!
Have you checked out the Cheer Chick Charlie series written by Leeane from Deep Fried Fruit?

Maybe she is old enough for Anne of Green Gables,at least the first couple? If she likes fantasy/magic books, try anything by Emily Rodda. Also Kate Forsyth's "Chain of Charms" and/or "Chronicles of Estalliana" series. There is a great blog called Playing by the Book that reviews and recommends heaps of fiction and non-fiction kids' books and suggests corresponding activities, the author has 4 year old and 8 year old girls. http://www.playingbythebook.net

Lucky you getting to relive all of those great books.
My favourites were The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Your daughter might be a touch young but I also loved the Ramona Quimby series, the Cam Jansen books and of course, The Babysitters Club. Can't wait to dig them out again.

I too love Enid Blyton and even though they are not 'classic' I loved the Babysitters Club series. My neice loves Nanny Piggins (you can find a review here: http://www.thebookchook.com/2013/03/childrens-books-review-adventures-of.html )
I hope when my little girl is Hannah's age she too loves reading.

I am probably not much help, I have no idea what great books are out there for young readers. It was a long time ago, but I loved to read the hardy boys and nancy drew. I loved reading Fatty Finn and Enid Blyton books. James and the giant peach is a good Roald Dahl book. Good luck in keeping her in good books 🙂

You are lucky to have a child that is hooked on reading! I loved reading Enid Blyton at that age. I also loved Trixie Belden, and my daughter loved Harry Potter at that age. There are so many in those series that your daughter might be ready for The Hobbit when she's finished.

I read heaps and our daughter reads heaps but I can't remember what books she read when she was that age. I will see if I can find them in the bookshelves and let you know.
    Have a great day !

Hi, my 8 almost 9yo is a good reader, but with a very small attention span. She starts a million and one crappy books and swaps between them. I am trying desperately to convince her that if she can put a book down one evening and then neglect it for a week then it is NOT a good book. It is so opposite my own experience with books that I find it incredibly frustrating, and I wonder if I have caused this damage by too much TV etc. Arghhh!

On the upside, the books that she seems to really really enjoy include Emily Eyefinger and Reginald Stilton and Clarice Bean. I am picking up The Witches by Roald Dahl from the library today and I hope that it will be a life-changer for her.

And I am throwing away all those stupid stupid stupid fairy bloody books that have the same plot over an over.

Best of luck. Loved this post

A lovely, easy Christmas with family, good food, a A lovely, easy Christmas with family, good food, a few presents, an afternoon swim and dinner on the veranda as the sun set. Time to stop and be thankful for the many blessings of the year. I hope you had a lovely Christmas too!
We have been mulling over how to fix up the drivew We have been mulling over how to fix up the driveway and lead up to our house for a while. Currently it’s just a dumping ground for old bits of metal and a big pile of mulch, but C would like to create a turning area and put in a garden. First up though, there’s a huge old stump that needs to go. What better excuse is there to have a fire on Sunday afternoon? C and the kids jumped on the quad bike and trailer, and hauled back a big pile of sticks and logs to help the stump burn. Once the fire was going, marshmallows were found and roasted. No better way to spend time together.

We were asked recently whether we “make” our kids work on the farm. The answer is of course not. Having said that, all three love to help out whenever they can. They all work hard because they want to; because they take pride in working hard and contributing in a meaningful way to our family life; because they love living on our farm and don’t remember life before we moved here. Whether it be planting trees or doing sheep work or feeding animals, they all want to be involved. As a parent, nothing is better than watching them grow in skill and confidence as they work along side you. We’re so glad that we get to spend time with our three, working together.
We’ve had an unexpected addition to the family ☘️🐑. She is a lot easier to look after than the other family members but she does try to escape her yard and head butt people. Poddy lambs are super cute but they tend to think they are a human. Clover the lamb is sure that Meg is her mum. Can’t think why… 🤔🤣

It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got through shearing without a hitch (thankfully 🙏) but we’ve had a run of the flu followed by Covid run through the family since then. The kids and I have tested positive (this is my second time getting it 🦠) though so far C has managed to avoid it. There has been a lot of lying on the couch feeling pretty ordinary. Han had to reschedule her driving test for a 4th time due to Covid, which is disappointing for her because she wants her freedom and for us because it would be so much more convenient if she could drive herself places. Just to add in to the mix, our hot water system has chosen now as a good time to die so we’re on cold showers until we’re all out of iso. This is not meant to be a whinging post but sometimes life just sucks a bit and it’s good to be real. Fortunately, the sight of the fire going with a stack of wood next to it cheers us up. Things will improve soon. Onwards we go…
