We are almost through shearing. It feels so short compared to previous year, mainly because it it. After my father in law sold three quarters of the farm last year, we have a lot less sheep than previously. So, of course, shearing doesn’t take so long.
Country Boy has been spending a lot of time in the shed, helping out with pressing the wool, and acting as a second rouse about when needed. Toby goes down with him, and hangs around the shed playing. Toby enjoys playing in the shed, but is always glad to come back to the house with me when I get home from work.
Aren't the sheep going to be rather cold over winter Jo? I thought September was shearing season, or do you have to take the shearers on when you can get them?
It is a bit cold for the lambs, so we put a plastic coat over them once they are shorn. We will take them off in June, once their wool has grown a bit. Because shearers go from place to place, each farm shears at a different time. We have shorn in May for as long as I have been around. Generally though, noone shears in June/July around here because it is too cold!
I love the photos … the sepia makes it look like you've gone back in time.
