Friday: On My Mind

Since I have been back at work, I have been struggling to keep up with the blog. This week I have finally started to feel on top of things. Hopefully I will get my blog on again now that things are calming down.

+ Country Boy took the one of the pigs to the abattoirs on Monday. It is hard to believe how fast they grow. Our sow is due to have piglets in a few weeks, so we needed to get rid of one. The butcher in town is going to cut up the meat for us, and we will pick it up sometime this week. Looking forward to lots of pork over the winter.

Incidentally, I have learnt that it is very hard to tell whether a pig is pregnant or not. You need to look at their teats which get bigger in the last few weeks of pregnancy – not unlike humans. You are most welcome for that tip!

+ If you follow me on instagram, you would have seen Tuesday nights’ cucumber haul. That’s 93 cucumbers in all. Country Boy took them down to the post office on Wednesday morning (our post office is only open for an hour, three days per week) so the whole village has plenty of cucumbers.

+ The weather has been gorgeous – country people always talk about the weather – and I am loving the cooler nights. Unfortunately it is reminding me that the cold weather is on its way. I’m enjoying the beautiful evening light while I can too!
+ My parents are coming to visit this weekend. Country Boy may try to build a sandpit for the kids. Hopefully it will be somewhere for Toby to dig other than the vegetable gardens. I even put together a pinterest board with ideas. I’m planning to spend some time getting on top of all the produce from the garden. I do love squirreling away food for the winter. It feels very ‘little house on the prairie’.

+ It is no secret that I love The West Wing – it’s my all time favourite show. During the week this article popped up in my facebook feed (scary how much fb knows about you!) naming the 10 best episodes. I kind of thought that they are all brilliant, and that choosing a favourite episode would be like having a favourite child! A friend pointed out that I named our son Toby, but I promise you that he was NOT named after the character – other wise he would have been Toby Joshua Samuel Josiah Claudia-Jean or something similar! Anyway, after much consideration, here is my absolute favourite scene from the West Wing…

And on that note, happy Friday everyone!

Sandpits provide hours of entertainment for kids! We have a little one in our backyard and I can just leave the twins there for ages!
Have a great time with your folks this weekend!

You live in such a gorgeous place, and my mum used to squirrel away lots of produce for us (I'm a born and bred farm girl) I have to say that I never got used to our stock being taken away on trucks, I know it's the way of life but still sad. Emily

Team work makes the dream work. We were asked rec Team work makes the dream work.
We were asked recently whether we “make” our kids work on the farm. The answer is “of course not”. Having said that, all three love to help out whenever they can. They all work hard because they want to; because they take pride in working hard and contributing in a meaningful way to our family life; because they love living on our farm and don’t remember life before we moved here. Whether it be planting trees or doing sheep work or feeding animals, they all want to be involved. As a parent, nothing is better than watching them grow in skill and confidence as they work along side you. We’re so glad that we get to spend time with our three, working together.
We’ve had an unexpected addition to the family ☘️🐑. She is a lot easier to look after than the other family members but she does try to escape her yard and head butt people. Poddy lambs are super cute but they tend to think they are a human. Clover the lamb is sure that Meg is her mum. Can’t think why… 🤔🤣

It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got through shearing without a hitch (thankfully 🙏) but we’ve had a run of the flu followed by Covid run through the family since then. The kids and I have tested positive (this is my second time getting it 🦠) though so far C has managed to avoid it. There has been a lot of lying on the couch feeling pretty ordinary. Han had to reschedule her driving test for a 4th time due to Covid, which is disappointing for her because she wants her freedom and for us because it would be so much more convenient if she could drive herself places. Just to add in to the mix, our hot water system has chosen now as a good time to die so we’re on cold showers until we’re all out of iso. This is not meant to be a whinging post but sometimes life just sucks a bit and it’s good to be real. Fortunately, the sight of the fire going with a stack of wood next to it cheers us up. Things will improve soon. Onwards we go…

We’ve been busy spending time with friends and family, harvesting the last of the summer produce, as well as a short escape to explore the big smoke. After the craziness of last term it was the break we all needed. It’s back to school for me tomorrow, and the kids are back on Wednesday. Shearing starts soon and so it’s all systems go over the next few weeks.
Covid has made some late changes to our weekend pl Covid has made some late changes to our weekend plans so we are embracing the unexpected and doing not much at home. Plenty of time for hanging out on the dam and enjoy the perfect weather.
