Misogyny is the hatred or dislike of women or girls. Misogyny can be manifested in numerous ways, including sexual discrimination, denigration of women, violence against women, and sexual objectification of women.
At first it is easy to wonder if there really are so many people walking around with misogynistic attitudes. How can people in this day and age seriously think that half the population is less valuable than the other? Not many men actually ‘hate’ women. Surely it is just a few old men who are holding out!
Unfortunately misogyny is a lot more insidious than out right hatred and dislike. Modern day misogyny manifests itself more in our societal attitudes towards women and their value to society. One glance at the magazine stand or music clips on television is all you need to see that our culture is telling young women that being hot and sexy is what makes them valuable. The same culture is teaching young men that women are there for their pleasure. Are we then really surprised that some of the sexist attitudes continue to proliferate?
