My Mother-in-law had an old twin tub washing machine for the last 38 years. Before front loaders became popular, they were the only machine suitable for people who don’t have lots of water (ie farmers). Her whole life she has done the washing standing in front of the machine, and going back every couple of minutes to put the next items in, or spin some clothes out. It takes ages. When her kids were young she must have spent all day, everyday washing.
Until last week…
She went to do some washing after her trip away, and the machine just stopped, never to go again – being so old, there is no replacement parts for the machine, so she had to get a new one.
They no longer make twin tubs, so she had to get a front loader. I was thinking how the new machine is going to change her whole life; washing is going to be a comparatively easy task. All you have to do is shove the clothes in, pour in some powder, shut everything and press start!
How easy! She won’t know herself!
I then started thinking about things that have changed my life. I have always had an automatic washing machine, BUT, there are several things that I thought of. Here are my (eventual) top three:
+ The Universal Remote. By the time we found the remote for the DVD, set top box, tv, playstation, VCR and stereo, half the day had gone by. These days we still have to hunt for the remote, but at least it is only one! No more fiddling around with 3 remotes just to watch a movie! Yay I say!
+ The Dust Buster. I love that I can just vacuum up the mess – I don’t need to sweep it up. My kids argue over whose turn it is to vacuum with it. Anything that makes my kids want to clean up is a good thing. Plus after the great honey fiasco it makes the whole house smell like cinnamon every time we use it. I love my dust buster!
+ Magnetic Knife Rack. I know that this one sounds stupid, but I love my knife rack – it makes it so easy to find the right knife.
So tell me friends, what things have changed your life? What am I missing out on?
