Friday: On My Mind

I have been thinking about how I have lots of little things to tell you, but they aren’t necessarily worth a post on their own, so I decided to start doing a weekly wrap up, so that I can tell you all the little things that make up life!

What We Are Up To…

: After visiting the mountains last weekend, we are looking forward to a weekend spent at home. At this stage we have no big plans, but Country Boy informs me that we have a lot of trees we need to plant.

: I also want to get some baking done. I have some ideas about what I want to make, but recently time has not been on my side. Stay tuned (hopefully) for some recipes.

: Country Boy’s seed stash for the summer vegetable gardens arrived this week. He has big plans for the garden which he has already started expanding. The tomato seed have already been planted, and placed in our sun room for our kids to knock over to germinate.

: All the parents at Hannah’s school take turns to make a hot meal for the kids each Wednesday. It was my turn this week, so I made pumpkin soup. My secret twist is to add a spoon of korma paste in with the onions at the beginning, and to roast the pumpkins first. It went down very well. You will be pleased to know that we only have 2 or 3 pumpkins left, after picking 47 last April. Checkout my recipe page to see some of the many things I have made with all that pumpkin. My pumpkin spice cakes, are developing quite a reputation locally!

: Yesterday morning the sun was up before I left for work! Admittedly I left 10 minutes late (at 7.25am), but it was still up! I haven’t left after the sun for about 3 months now. I cannot tell you how happy it made me feel. Spring is on the way!!!!

:Meg got a letter inviting her to join the local kindergarten orientation program for next year. sob – she seems too little to be going to big school, but she is certainly ready!

What I Have Been Reading…

: I recently found local is lovely a beautiful farm and food blog, written by Sofie Hansen. She has beautiful food, and pictures of their farm in Orange. She is living my dream!

: I found Posie Gets Cozy last year, and I just adore the beautiful photos. This is on my must look at list!

: I’ve been reading “The Thunderbolt Kid” by Bill Bryson (again). I love all of Bill Bryson’s books, and have read them all several times. He makes such salient and funny observations about life, and he has the most amazing knowledge of useless information. Love it.

: On the way to and from work I have been listening to audio books. Most recently it has been “Death At Pemberley” by PD James. As much as I hate the long commute, I am hooked on the story at the moment. When I got home yesterday, I had to sit in the car for another 5 minutes to finish the chapter, before I could come inside.

Sounds like a great week, especially about the sun being up. Bring on Spring!

I made soup with left over roast pumpkin a few months ago… SO much nicer than when I just boil or *gasp* microwave it. I make it that way forever now.

Funny about the audio book in the car – I hate it when the train gets to my stop when I'm in the middle of a good bit of a book. Sometimes I'm even tempted to miss my stop… at least on the way to work, but never on the way home!

My husband has been known to sit on a tractor waiting for a play to finish on the radio before he jumps off to refill the sprayer. You aren't alone!

That's very funny that you needed to finish the book chapter to come inside. I don't think I've seen yr blog before, sounds like you are having fun! Look forward to reading more.

Team work makes the dream work. We were asked rec Team work makes the dream work.
We were asked recently whether we “make” our kids work on the farm. The answer is “of course not”. Having said that, all three love to help out whenever they can. They all work hard because they want to; because they take pride in working hard and contributing in a meaningful way to our family life; because they love living on our farm and don’t remember life before we moved here. Whether it be planting trees or doing sheep work or feeding animals, they all want to be involved. As a parent, nothing is better than watching them grow in skill and confidence as they work along side you. We’re so glad that we get to spend time with our three, working together.
We’ve had an unexpected addition to the family ☘️🐑. She is a lot easier to look after than the other family members but she does try to escape her yard and head butt people. Poddy lambs are super cute but they tend to think they are a human. Clover the lamb is sure that Meg is her mum. Can’t think why… 🤔🤣

It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got through shearing without a hitch (thankfully 🙏) but we’ve had a run of the flu followed by Covid run through the family since then. The kids and I have tested positive (this is my second time getting it 🦠) though so far C has managed to avoid it. There has been a lot of lying on the couch feeling pretty ordinary. Han had to reschedule her driving test for a 4th time due to Covid, which is disappointing for her because she wants her freedom and for us because it would be so much more convenient if she could drive herself places. Just to add in to the mix, our hot water system has chosen now as a good time to die so we’re on cold showers until we’re all out of iso. This is not meant to be a whinging post but sometimes life just sucks a bit and it’s good to be real. Fortunately, the sight of the fire going with a stack of wood next to it cheers us up. Things will improve soon. Onwards we go…

We’ve been busy spending time with friends and family, harvesting the last of the summer produce, as well as a short escape to explore the big smoke. After the craziness of last term it was the break we all needed. It’s back to school for me tomorrow, and the kids are back on Wednesday. Shearing starts soon and so it’s all systems go over the next few weeks.
Covid has made some late changes to our weekend pl Covid has made some late changes to our weekend plans so we are embracing the unexpected and doing not much at home. Plenty of time for hanging out on the dam and enjoy the perfect weather.
