Progress

We have
been visiting our farm for the past week, making preparations to the house
before we move down in December. My parents, sister and brother-in-law have
also joined us to do some renovation type things to the house, and it is slowly
coming together and looking more like somewhere I might actually choose to
live!
The first
and most exciting thing that has happened is that we have sorted out all my
internet issues. A visit to the local Telstra shop and a large aerial means
that I don’t need to get satellite broadband (both expensive and very slow)! I
cannot tell you how happy this makes me! The Country Boy thinks I have lost my
head, but I am smiling as I sit and type next to the fire! More importantly, I
feel that I will not be so isolated if I have good internet access – an
essential thing for me!
My
sister, mother, and I have taken down all the old curtains (was red velvet ever
a good curtain choice??), washed all the walls with sugar soap, vacuumed
everywhere and then put up some much nicer curtains we got at the local op
shop. Best of all the curtains fit perfectly. We have put rugs on the floor of
the lounge and spare room, and it is looking quite homely (if not super
stylish).
My new curtains (have fixed up their hanging now too!)

We have filled several boxes with the various bits and pieces that have been left around the house; lamps with fish motifs, aluminium saucepans, unusual ornaments and other bits and pieces are all packed up. I just need to find somewhere to chuck put them.
My father
who is fantastic at fixing things, has made me a kitchen bench out of a piece
of laminate, so I at least have a bench to cook on. He and The Country Boy
spent Saturday on the verandah (in the cold and wet) sawing and cutting, and
then suddenly I had a kitchen bench!
Here’s my kitchen bench being built
Over the
next couple of days we need to put up some outdoor blinds to cut out the summer
northerly sun, remove the carpet from the bathroom (???? I know!) . The Country
Boy also wants to dig up his vege garden and do a few other bits and pieces but
progress has definitely been made!

We don't get adsl in our area! There is a mobile phone tower about 20km away but mobile phone reception at our farm in non existent unless you are on a hill (which our house isn't). We managed to get mobile broadband through telstra by getting an external antenna which can boost the signal (like a car phone antenna) and strapped it to a pole on the roof (with tv antenna). We then have a 5 meter cable which plugs into the mobile broadband usb, which then plugs into the router to give us wifi (and prevent domestic issues caused by us not being able to share computers very well). It was quite an ordeal. We went to the telstra shop about 100km away to get the equipment and advice we needed, but was totally worth it. No broadband is a deal breaker as far as I am concerned!
If you need more details let me know!

It sounds like it is coming together Jo.
The house reminds me of the main farmhouse on our farm. We are moving into the shed =).
So are you using mobile wifi or adsl broadband. My hub doesn't understand either ! I have to have it.

Team work makes the dream work. We were asked rec Team work makes the dream work.
We were asked recently whether we “make” our kids work on the farm. The answer is “of course not”. Having said that, all three love to help out whenever they can. They all work hard because they want to; because they take pride in working hard and contributing in a meaningful way to our family life; because they love living on our farm and don’t remember life before we moved here. Whether it be planting trees or doing sheep work or feeding animals, they all want to be involved. As a parent, nothing is better than watching them grow in skill and confidence as they work along side you. We’re so glad that we get to spend time with our three, working together.
We’ve had an unexpected addition to the family ☘️🐑. She is a lot easier to look after than the other family members but she does try to escape her yard and head butt people. Poddy lambs are super cute but they tend to think they are a human. Clover the lamb is sure that Meg is her mum. Can’t think why… 🤔🤣

It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got through shearing without a hitch (thankfully 🙏) but we’ve had a run of the flu followed by Covid run through the family since then. The kids and I have tested positive (this is my second time getting it 🦠) though so far C has managed to avoid it. There has been a lot of lying on the couch feeling pretty ordinary. Han had to reschedule her driving test for a 4th time due to Covid, which is disappointing for her because she wants her freedom and for us because it would be so much more convenient if she could drive herself places. Just to add in to the mix, our hot water system has chosen now as a good time to die so we’re on cold showers until we’re all out of iso. This is not meant to be a whinging post but sometimes life just sucks a bit and it’s good to be real. Fortunately, the sight of the fire going with a stack of wood next to it cheers us up. Things will improve soon. Onwards we go…

We’ve been busy spending time with friends and family, harvesting the last of the summer produce, as well as a short escape to explore the big smoke. After the craziness of last term it was the break we all needed. It’s back to school for me tomorrow, and the kids are back on Wednesday. Shearing starts soon and so it’s all systems go over the next few weeks.
Covid has made some late changes to our weekend pl Covid has made some late changes to our weekend plans so we are embracing the unexpected and doing not much at home. Plenty of time for hanging out on the dam and enjoy the perfect weather.
