Keeping It Simple | Create A Donations Box

Often when we are sorting something out, we don’t have anywhere to put the things we no longer want, so we leave them where they are and hope we remember to get rid of them later. Of course we don’t remember so the clutter remains. Today I’m sharing something that is very quick and easy to do, but can make simplifying so much easier.

Create a donation box. Yep it’s that simple. Find a box or carton, label it donations, and put it somewhere easy to access. Every time you come across something you no longer use put it in the donation box. Then whenever you go to town (or are near your local charity shop), pop whatever is in the box into a plastic bag and take it to the donation bins in town. By doing this you avoid that pile of junk on the bench, and you have an active reminder to take the no longer wanted items out of your home.

At the same time, create a returns box. Anything you have borrowed from a friend, or want to give to a friend goes in the box. Again if you have the box in an easy to access spot (near the door you walk out of when leaving the house is best) you can grab anything relevant as you go.

Ours sit on top of our craft cupboard in our spare room. As you can see, they are not particularly beautiful, but they are functional. Whenever I need to donate or return something, I just pop it in the right box and keep on going.

I think one of the biggest causes of clutter is having no where to put something. By creating a donation box, you have somewhere to (temporarily) put all those things you want to get rid of, and a strategy to help you get it out of the house.

Do you have a strategy for dealing with all those things that you need to get out of the house? I’d love to hear how others deal with items they are getting rid of.

Great idea! I have an 'op-shop' bag for the same purpose. I used to think that I needed a substantial amount of donations to make the trip worthwhile however if it is a smaller manageable bag it can just pop in the donation bins. Duh! We are about to re-carpet our house and I am NOT putting all that 'stuff' back in the rooms. The children (Mr19 and Miss16) have been remarkably disciplined with what they have culled from their bedrooms. There have been lots of trips past the donation bins.

Same with me. We live in an original farmhouse of about the same era, so when it was built the style was lots of square rooms, including kitchen. No open plan designs then! And no pantry! Maybe one day we will alter it.

oh i am very interested in these ideas. i am so over all our clutter. we move house in 9 days, and i am culling as i go and also when i unpack. but i need some functional solutions for once we are set up in our new house, something i can stick too and doesn't take up much room.

Picture perfect way to instill so many values in our kids – responsibilty, care for animals, routine, a sense of a job well done, recycling and its eggy rewards! Well done.

It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got It’s been a tough few weeks on the farm. We got through shearing without a hitch (thankfully 🙏) but we’ve had a run of the flu followed by Covid run through the family since then. The kids and I have tested positive (this is my second time getting it 🦠) though so far C has managed to avoid it. There has been a lot of lying on the couch feeling pretty ordinary. Han had to reschedule her driving test for a 4th time due to Covid, which is disappointing for her because she wants her freedom and for us because it would be so much more convenient if she could drive herself places. Just to add in to the mix, our hot water system has chosen now as a good time to die so we’re on cold showers until we’re all out of iso. This is not meant to be a whinging post but sometimes life just sucks a bit and it’s good to be real. Fortunately, the sight of the fire going with a stack of wood next to it cheers us up. Things will improve soon. Onwards we go…

We’ve been busy spending time with friends and family, harvesting the last of the summer produce, as well as a short escape to explore the big smoke. After the craziness of last term it was the break we all needed. It’s back to school for me tomorrow, and the kids are back on Wednesday. Shearing starts soon and so it’s all systems go over the next few weeks.

Autumn has arrived in the orchard and the apple tr Autumn has arrived in the orchard and the apple trees are full of fruit. Yesterday we filled five baskets of apples that had fallen off the trees. Then we had apple crumble for dessert last night. Between the orchard and the vegetable garden this time of year is always super busy as we deal with all the harvest. No so busy though, that I can’t grab the camera and snap a few pics.

Late summer evenings spent picking fruit in the or Late summer evenings spent picking fruit in the orchard are just the best. We take baskets down to gather the fruit and we inspect the trees and plan what we will do with it all. Tonight we gathered blackberries, nectarines and the first apples. The kids eat the fruit right off the trees - it tastes so much better than shop bought fruit. All the rain this year has not been good for all our plants; no mulberries and a lot less of some of the others. It reminds us of how much we depend on the weather and how much is out of our hands.
